Unswallow the Tongue: A Workshop to Queer Creation Myths

Unswallow the Tongue: A Workshop to Queer Creation Myths

The Ancient Myths... Books of scripture... Oral traditions... Superhero origin stories... Family history... Genetic ancestry tests... These are all attempts to answer the fundamentally human questions "Where did I come from?" and "Where do I fit in the grand scheme of things?"

Creation myths reveal what we understand about the world around us and our place within it. As queers, so many of our creation myths are tied to traditions that have purposefully erased us from our origins. This leaves many queers longing to find their place in The Cosmos... Unswallow the Tongue is an opportunity to fix this, both for yourself and for others in our community.

Here's the gist: Jason Wyman and Scott Sessions, awesome queer artists and activists, are facilitating a 3-hour workshop on Nov. 18th to help LGBTQ+ adults and comrades to queer an origin story or creation myth which is meaningful to the writer. Two weeks later, on Nov. 30th, we'll hold a community event where each writer is invited to read their piece aloud to an audience of loved ones and comrades.

We need spaces where we can dig into the myths, sacred texts, and origin stories that create(d) who we are and remake them in our image. Then, we need ways for us to pass on, transmit, and transmute our queered creation myths to our kin near and far, now and into the future. This is how we ensure our existence.

Unswallow the Tongue: A Reading of Queer Creation Myths

Unswallow the Tongue: A Reading of Queer Creation Myths

As the days grow darker, our thoughts turn to the big questions: Where did we come from? Where do we fit within the cosmos? Where do we want to go?

Creation myths reveal what we understand about the world around us and our place within it. As queers, so many of our creation myths are tied to traditions that have purposefully erased us from our origins. This leaves many longing to find their place in The Cosmos... Unswallow the Tongue provides an opportunity to find yourself amidst a queer creation.

Here's the gist: Jason Wyman and Scott Sessions, awesome queer artists and activists, are hosting a reading of creation myths! Don your coziest top, grab a warm cup of brew, and pull up next to the proverbial fire to witness the unveiling of several creation stories read aloud.

Anyone may bring a reading to share! All types of origin stories/creation myths are welcome to be shared, whether original or not. All genres welcome (poetry, prose, historical, etc). We ask that readings last 1-8 minutes so there's time for everyone to share.

(If you're interested in creating and sharing your own written piece, you're invited to the related workshop coming this January! Details and registration are forthcoming here: Unswallow the Tongue workshop)

What you can expect at the reading:

  • Several creation stories read aloud by sweet souls!

  • Comfy snacks and drinks!

  • A room full of queers and queer-loving friends!

  • An opportunity to ponder and discuss big questions with others who care as deeply as you do <3

We all need spaces where we can dig into the myths, sacred texts, and origin stories that create(d) who we are and remake them in our image. Then, we need ways for us to pass on, transmit, and transmute our queered creation myths to our kin near and far, now and into the future. This is how we ensure our existence.

Queerly Complex’s Jason Wyman and Queer Bedtime Stories’ Scott Sessions know how to hold intimate and tender spaces for queers and comrades to gather, talk story, and create. Both have curated literary series for queer, non-binary, and trans kin and comrades in-person and online with an eye towards inviting anyone who is called to share and contribute. And both deeply explore queer histories, the Cosmic Mysteries, and the myths and stories that form our existence.

In a first time collaboration, Jason and Scott are joining forces to produce and host a two-part event series that bring together our intersecting communities to co-create and share queered creation myths.

Won't you join us?

The Arbor is an event and co-working space for the queer artist and filmmaking community. This Mission-based art space was home to the iconic queer feminist organization - Femina Potens - from 2002 - 2007 - hosting nearly 200 visual and performance art events during that time. The Arbor is now the home to the queer multi-media film focused non-profit organization, Alchemy Film Foundation

Alchemy Film Foundation is a nonprofit organization and multi-media art space dedicated to the advancement, education and representation of queer arts with an emphasis on film, video art and immersive cinematic experiences.

We regularly explore the intersections between photography, performance art, and experimental video works and how non-traditional visual storytelling can create a social, emotional and global impact and transformation.

We support the creation of fiction and non-fiction queer and transgender narratives in film and media arts through queer cinema salons, panels, workshops, community building, and financially supporting the creation of queer screenwriting and filmmaking.

Along with the building of community and supporting the work of queer cinema and media arts, Alchemy Film Foundation hosts monthly programming at our screening room, gallery, and performance space located in San Francisco's Mission District at 465 S. Van Ness Ave. San Francisco CA. www.AlchemyFilmFoundation.org
